Baseball Update: Jenkins in San Diego... Who wants Brandon Inge and The Brewers are at it Again

By Dex

(Many of the Deals in the works will have to wait to fall through
I until Kosume Fukudome makes his Decision)

12/9/07

--Dexter Sports

It has been a Slow week around Major League Baseball, beyond the big landing of Dontrelle Willis, and Miguel Cabrera in the AL Central. Johan Santana remains a Twin, Barry Bonds is still a cheat, and a lot of teams are yet to make moves. After these meetings, I cant see Santana moving anywhere, unless Omar Minaya pulls something out for the Mets. The Twins want Jose Reyes, but we all know he will stay in New York. With Andruw Jones landing with Torre and the Dodgers, look for other center fielders to start falling where they may. Rowand could end up back with the Phillies, though i think he we land in a small market, since most big market clubs have covered their center field woes. Look for the Twins to swoop in as well as the Orioles to throw in deals. Where Rowand lands should all depend on what Coco Crisp decides. If he is willing to be the 4th outfielder, he will make 4.5 mil on the bench. Teams that seem interested in Crisp: the White Sox, Rangers, Padres and yet again the orioles. I wouldn't be suprised to see the nationals grab a center fielder in the near feature as well

In the Erik Bedard chase, things seem to be heating up between Cincinnati and Baltimore. The Reds have put a deal together that doesn't include Jay Bruce, the Minor League Player of the year in 2007. The deal would include Homer Bailey, Joel Votto and a prospect. The Orioles are high on 21 year old Joel Cueto, but might have to sacrifice for something of less value. Other Suitors for Bedard seem to be the Mets and possibly the Yankees. The wanting of Oakland's Dan Haron and Joe Blanton have seemed to cool, but look for talks to pick up again. It doesn't seem that the Yankees are content with Pettite, Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, Mussina and either Joba Chamberlain, Kei Igawa or Chris Britton.

The Brewers are at it again. After signing David Riske and bringing in Solomon Torres, The Brewers agreed in principle to a one year deal with 2003 Cy Young award winner Eric Gagne. The only question is if Gagne will be the 2003 closer or the 2007 set up man with the Red Sox. Most think that David Riske and Derrick Turnbow will be used as setup men in the 8th while the combo of Matt Wise, Solomon Torres and Guillermo Mota will be used in the sixth and seventh. Many think with all the bullpen help brought in, the Brewers are looking to put Manny Parra or Claudio Vargas into a package to obtain a third baseman. With Brandon Inge now on the market, the brewers seem suitable but will most likely go after a cheaper answer. I would think that Pedro Feliz is a good fit, but nothing has been speculated about the free agent. Though Inge carries a hefty deal, some teams might be interested if the tigers pick up some of his contract. The Pirates, Giants, Nationals, Orioles among others might be interested. Inge could be used as a super utility player, but wants to be an everyday starter. His best luck would be in San Fransisco. The Tigers could pick up the contract of Ray Durham to cover and trade him for prospects. The Pirates also might be interested if they can dump the contract of Matt Morris.

The Padres are in a mix of Interesting Moves. The team has brought back Milton Bradley, and is in talks with Mike Cameron. It seems they are going to wait it out for Japanese Outfielder Kosume Fukodome to make the decision on whether to play in the U.S. or Japan. The Outfielder could pull 10- 15 million a year from either the Cubs or Padres among others interested. The Padres have also contacted Geoff Jenkins, but will most likely hold off until word from Fukodome. Other teams that are interested seem to be the Rays, Rangers, A's and possibly the Red Sox. He would fill for Bobby Keilty.

Thats all for now: Stay Tuned for more!

The Santana Situation: Why the Red Sox should Lay-Off

By Dex

(Baseball's best pitcher should be a Yankee or Red Sox by the end of next week.)

12/2/07
--Dexter Sports

Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls, Santana is moving to a East Coast City near you, and it isn't the world renown guitarist either. The Minnesota Twins are getting right to business, unlike the Florida Marlins front office, who has continued to tease teams interested in Miguel Cabrera It has been stated that within 72 hours, Starting Pitcher Johan Santana will have a new home either in Boston or New York. Now that Boston has been so willing to add Youngster Jacoby Ellsbury into the mix, It looks like the favored has to be the Sox, even though they have stated that Jon Lester will not be packaged in the deal. The Yankees on the other hand, are doing what they can to lock up baseball's best pitcher because their pitching needs all the help it can get. Out of disparity the yanks threw young pitcher Phil Hughes with Melky Cabrera and a third "second tier" prospect. The Yanks want answers though, and if they don't here an answer by Tuesday, they will pull out. Though grabbing Santana would make the best rotation in the league, and possibly of all time, The price paid isn't worth it..... Even though they would be keeping the Lefty away from that Evil Empire in New York. Listen up Theo, You don't want to make this move.

First and Foremost, lets look at this over the long haul. Sure, you will lose the likes of Schilling and most likely Tim Wakefield after '08, but there is a surplus of free agents that will hit the Market, headlining is Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia. Why not wait and hold on to that talent? Plus, shouldn't you have Mike Lowell on the mind, the World Series MVP that was just as pivotal as Big Papi and Manny down the stretch, plus Jacoby Ellsbury has become and American star, instantly, after stealing a base in the World Series, and winning Americans a Free Taco! On a serious note though, Ellsbury could be that lead-off spark that was missing, and trust me, Coco is not the answer any more. Ellsbury, along with Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, Manny Declareman and the rest of the young talent could win you a lot more games then Santana. So Mr. Epstein, If I may say so myself, don't trade away Mr. Steal a Base for a Taco. It isn't in the right interest. We can do with out the cereal (Coco Crisp) but please don't take away the main course.

Part Two: Pitchers and Outfielders of the 2007 Free Agent Class

By Dex

(Carlos Silva and Fransisco Cordero are two of the best Pitchers available in the Free agent market)

11/18/07

--Dexter Sports

Though the infield lacks a lot of depth this off-season, the pitching and outfield has a lot of players that could fill roles on many clubs. Lets start off with the outfield.

Left Field

The Best:

Geoff Jenkins- Jenkins, though up in age, could be a great left handed option for many teams. Rumors were that he was heading to Detroit, but since the recent trade for Jacque Jones, Jenkins is still on the market. His arm strength would be an instant bonus, but his hitting will also land him a starting job somewhere. He also has the ability to play first base

Luis Gonzalez- Luis continues the trend of old outfielders, but still has a lot in the tank for 20 homers and 100 RBIs if he stays healthy. It will be interesting to see where he could go.

Bargain deals:

Milton Bradley- Though he will miss most of the beginning of 08, Bradley could be a big boost for a couple of teams, much like he was for San Diego. His Antics might lose him a chance right away, but someone will come calling for him.

Shannon Stewart- The 33 year old Stewart had a decent year in Oakland, and could land as a fourth outfielder or a lead-off guy in many AL lineups. I wouldnt be suprised if he signed a one year deal much like he did with Oakland last year .

Center Field:

The Best:

Torii Hunter - This is a no- doubter. Torii might have lost a step the last few years, but he is still aver capable center fielder. Look for him to land a huge deal in Texas, New York or anyone in need of a center fielder.

Andruw Jones- Once compared to Willie Mays, Jone will get a lot of money for a big market like the Yankees or a non -contender. Rumor has it that we could see him in a Brave uniform again as well

Aaron Rowand- Rowand had a break out year for the phils, proving his power with 27 homers and his fielding ability, winning the 2007 gold glove award. With the Phillies trading center fielder Micheal Bourne to Houston, it suggests that Rowand should be back for 2008. If not, Rowand could land a lot of money from a lot of teams.

Bargain Deals:

Mike Cameron- Though he will be suspended for the first 50 games, and is a risk to sign, I think that Mike Cameron could be a very good fit for some teams late in the year. Look for someone to take a chance on him.

Darin Erstad- Though he is up in age, Erstad is a tough, scrappy and energetic player who can also fill in at first. He could be a number one choice of the bench for a lot of teams

Right Field:

The Best:

Not Applicable- The Right Field Market is one of the worst ever. Cliff Floyd and Shawn Green were the only players that played all of last year, and Trot Nixon was Injured most of it. Preston Wilson could bring power, but with it comes a BUNCH of strikeouts.

Starting Pitching

The Best:

Andy Pettite - It is not suprising that Pettite is pulling the old Clemens trick. They are great friends and have been. Both went to Houston then came back to New York. Now, both are talking about retirement. If we ever figure out if Pettite is coming back, he is one of the front runners in the market. I think his declined option would suggest that he wants more money, because his family has always been based in New York. I wont be suprised if the Yankees pay him out of retirement.

Carlos Silva- This young arm will most likely go to the highest bidder, because he does not have a base team to go back to. The Twins are not willing to pay him. Look for way too much money to be spent on Silva, Just because of the constant need for better pitching.

Freddy Garcia- The Phillies would be smart to bring him back, but since the Lidge deal, we will most likely see Brett Myers back in the Rotation. Garcia could go virtually anywhere and will be a good veteran 3-5 starter.

Bargain Deals:

Kris Benson- Though he was out for all of 07, Benson could be a surprise pickup for the back end of the rotation or as a spot starter . His price would be cheap, since he struggled before his injury.

There are a lot of guys that could prove to be good signings for cheap, including Brett Tomko, Randy Wolf, Rodrigo Lopez, Joe Kennedy and Matt Clement, if your willing to take the chance. Also, Bartolo Colon could be a GREAT asset, if he stays healthy, something he hasn't been able to do since the Cleveland days

Relief Pitchers:

The Best:

Fransisco Cordero- Nobody Knows where this guy is going to land, but he will make a big splash where he does. I think the Brewers have a legit shot at landing him, but look for the Yankees to be in the mix if Mariano Rivera bolts to the Dodgers.(Rivera will not be listed because his pending deal with New York) Other teams include Houston, Los Angeles (Dodgers) and the Giants among others.

Kerry Wood- Though his starting days are over, Wood has developed into a good setup reliever and could become a key component to a lot of bullpens. I think the cubs are not a reach, but other teams could be the Tigers, Cardinals, Mariners, or anyone in search for bullpen help.

Ron Mahay- Who is he you ask? Though Mahay isn't well known, he is the best lefty specialist available, and because of it could receive a bunch of cash, much like Jamie Walker did last year.

Bargain Deals:

David Riske- Though he had a tremendous season last year, I think that Riske will take a paycut to get out of Kansas City. He could be a key to a great back end.

Troy Percival- Though Detroit was not willing to give him a second chance after he blew out his elbow, Saint Louis was and It payed off late in the season. Percival will go cheap, maybe even for a minor league contract, but could end up being a good middle reliever, though he would only be able to pitch an inning at a time.

That concludes the free agent list: Stay Tuned for a Barry Bonds Special, and MORE!

Where will they go? 2007's MLB Free Agent Class

By Dex

(Pedro Feliz and Kazuo Matsui could be key Free Agent signings in 2008.)
11/13/07

--Dexter Sports

Though this free agent market has been deemed weak, I will look at some of the best by position to give you a break down of what is left out there. Sure, Alex Rodriguez is most likely a Yankee, and Posada is, there are still plenty of players out there. We can forget about Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera for the most part, so I will not look into these guys

We will Start at First base

The Canidates:

Sean Casey- Casey, who was let go by Detroit is probably one of the most reliable first baseman in the free agent Market. First Base seems to be a weak position in this years market, but a guy like Casey can fill in nicely, especially in a National League Lineup, where his defense would be greatly appreciated

Brad Wilkerson- Wilkerson would be a nice add for a lot of teams, because of his presence at the plate as well as his ability to play the outfield. Wilkerson could fit anywhere, but would be a good player off the bench for any team. Expect a big contract, just because of the demand he will get.

Bargain Deal: Tony Clark: Clark's Glove will not blow anyone out of the water, but his bat is something that can be reckoned with. He could fit on any team and though he should be a bargain, the contract will be boosted because of the lack of help at DH and first base. Aaron Boone could be another bargain deal, because of an oft-injured 2007. I would not be suprised to see him return to a national league team that needs a solid defender at first or a bench/role player

Second Base

The Cream of the Crop:

Kazuo Matsui: I know, I know, he had a great post season, so what? Honestly, out of all the second baseman, Matsui is the best to offer. It would be surprising to see Colorado bring him back, but if not, he could land a lot of money because of his post season. This might be the weakest position of the market, but the whole middle infield is weak. Matsui will still be a good add for a lot of teams looking for a middle infielder

Bargain Deals:

Luis Castillo- You all remember this high flying defensive second baseman who was a catalyst of the 2003 world series don't you? Probably not because he has bounced around the league the last couple years. Again, since the free agent market for second base is low, Castillo could possibly be overpaid.

Third Base:

Though Mike Lowell and Alex Rodriguez are Free Agents, lets look beyond the two powers of free agency, into yet another weak part of the market:

The Best:

Pedro Feliz- The Giants have played him at first base, third base and even outfield, in the quest to see this kid blossom but it just hasn't happened. Though he hasn't been what has promised, a possible change of scenery might just do the trick . Feliz hit 20 dingers last season and had 72 RBIs. anybody who gives this kid a chance could see the next best third baseman in the making

Bargain Deals:

Corey Koskie: Though he sat out most of the 2007 Campaign due to a Concussion, Koskie could become one of the next great DH in the American League. He has expressed continuous desire to return to baseball, and his perfect oppurtunity would come with a small market team. With Bonds currently out of the mix, Koskie could fill that void on an American League roster.

Mike Lamb: Though his name isnt talked about much, Lamb could be a very good compliment to an offense. He hit a very solid .289 last year with Houston, and with talk of them bringing back Geoff Blum, Lamb could decide to go else where for the 2008 season.

Shortstop:

The Good:

David Eckstein: He is the only shortstop in the market that is worth talking about. The former world series MVP could land a lot of money from a desperate team. This is why the tigers went via trade for the shortstop they needed, because nothing really was available, though Eckstein can add a lot of character to a team. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in Saint Louis, though the cheaper rout would be to move Aaron miles to short.

Bargain Deals:

Going with your teams best minor league shortstop, it will be better that way

Catcher:

The best:

Paul Lo Duca- Now that Jorge Posada is off the list, New Yorks other Catcher is on the hot list. Though a lot of teams are set at Catcher, I think that the market could jump on him. Look for teams that were gunning after posada to jump on the Lo Duca bandwagon. I think that Philadelphia could be in the mix unless they are comfortable with Chris Coste. Others could be Baltimore, Toronto, San Diego and Chicago(AL).

Jason Kendall- Though he isn't the lead-off catcher he once was, for a cheaper price Kendall could be a nice fit on almost any roster. Look for Kendall to land somewhere soon.

Bargain Deals:

Mike Matheny- This guy would be a steal as a backup or a starter because of his defensive ability. He could be a good supplement to a young pitching staff

Jose Molina- he is not as defensively sound as his brother Yadier, and not as offensively sound as Bengie but he could be a nice backup on any roster.

Kansas vs. UCONN: College Football's True Championship Game....I Think????

By Dex
Kansas Versus UCONN in the National Championship: Wouldn't it be Pure Bliss?

VS.

11/10/07
--Dexter Sports

First it is the Colorado Rockies, shocking the Rocky Mountain Air right from our lungs. Where did they come from? What in the world happened? I'll tell you what happened, it was a little something called determination. How about the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers? Well, people had them shot down from contention because the Bears had to much bite. As we all know, their bite is more of a nibble and their growl is more of a twisted, insane and ashamed cry for help. Now it is College Football's turn to throw in two underdogs, that are destined for Glory. The Kansas Jayhawks and The UCONN Huskies are highly regarded and favored for the national championship: IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How great would it be to see these two teams in the National Championship. Both are riding the same ship that Boise State did a year ago, and both teams are very similar. Lets have a look.....

Both UCONN and Kansas have had big wins to date. Kansas, who went in and defeated in-state rival Kansas State, who was ranked at the time. UCONN has taken the Big East by storm. Though they lost a nail biter to ACC foe Virginia, they have dominated the Big East Conference. With wins over Louisville, South Florida, and Rice University, this team has near as many Quality wins as the Ohio State Buckeyes who sit in the number one slot. Both teams are led by very talented quarterbacks with similar numbers. The Huskies are led by Junior Tyler Lorenson(shown above) who sports a 90 QB rating, but has been a solid leader on the field. Kansas is lead by a solid offense, with quarterback Tom Reesing, who has similar numbers as Ohio State's Todd Beckman who is starting to creep into Heisman talk. The Offense is also powered by a strong running game, led by Brandon McAnderson with 807 Rushing yards on the year, and Jake Sharp who has barreled 661 yards this year. Both teams will end the season against their toughest opponents. Kansas will have to beat #7 Missouri while UConn will have to battle a very good West Virginia team.

Though the outcome is doubtful, it would be great to see these two unexpected teams duke it out for College Football's National Championship. Hey, it could still happen.... right? I sure hope so, because it would be a nice smack in the face to the BCS system.

Are the Boston Celtics for Real- Why the Big Three will fall short of Success

By Dex
11/8/07
--Dexter Sports

Though the Big Three is Enough to Compete in the East, Celtics will not Hold up for a Title Run

(Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett will Bring Boston Glory, but not complete Glory)

Its Plastered all over, Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge has been saying it since Acquiring Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett this season. One glance that the Celtics website and you will witness it on the front banner. Think Big. Sure, the Celtics have built a strong core that will surely be successful in the weakened East, but the lack of defense, ball handling, and depth are good enough reasons to defeat the idea of thinking big.

Sure, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce on the same court is intriguing, and so far seems to work, going 3-0 to start the season, but overall this team is not ready for championship basketball. All championship basketball has a great defensive core, led by strong yet quick guards. Beyond Kevin Garnett, this team doesn't have anyone who can step up on the defensive side. Pierce, who might be the worst defensive small forward and Allen, who has declined defensively since his days in Milwaukee will make it hard to stop opponents. Luckily, the Celtics compete in the Lackluster East, where there are only a few teams with potent offenses. Adding to this horrid defense is youngster Rajon Rondo, who has often been said to play worse defense than a high school point guard. adding to his defensive problems is the fact that he does not have the experience in ball handling that most point guards do. The veteran ability of the rest of the starting lineup should be able to cover that. Another issue seems to be rebounding, where the Celtics will hope that Kendrick Perkins can make some sort of impact. Garnett, who currently pulls down 15 rebounds a game will be the only way that this team will score second-chance points. Once Garnett, Allen and Pierce are taken out of the lineup this team is horrendous. Though Eddie House and James Posey are good options of the bench, the Celtics do not have anyone beyond that. there is not a player that can come in and shut down a player defensively.

The Celtics will compete in the East, but when the powers of the west come knocking, there is no way this team would hold up. Celtics fans better hope all three stay healthy, or this could be a long season for fans of this legendary franchise. Finally, doesn't anyone realize neither Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce have ever brought home a championship? Plus, superstar pairs only work in two...... (Kobe and Shaq, D-Wade and Shaq, Jordan and Pippen, Stockton and Malone... the list goes on and on....)

Final Line: The Celtics will finish in the top 4 of the east, but will struggle when it comes to the playoffs

Alex Rodriguez Would Be a "GIANT" Player to Build Around

By Dex
PART IV: San Fransisco is Perfect Fit for a "Giant" Ego

Above: First it was Mel Ott, Then it was Willie Mays. Barry Bonds Lit up the Bay as of Late; Now is it Alex Rodriguez's Turn?

11/04/07
--Dexter Sports

First It was Mel Ott, A 12 Time all-star, and a hall of famer in 1951. All of his 22 years a New York Giant. Don't Know him? Well, you should. He has more home runs in New York than the Great Bambino. He has more home runs in one stadium than anybody else (323 in the Polo Grounds).

Then it was the Say Hey Kid, Willie Mays. He is easily argued as one of the best players ever. His Legacy lies within what everyone refers to as "The Catch,"which is simply a moment that defines baseball. Want to know who baseball's real Iron Man is? Willie Mays played 13 consecutive seasons of 150 plus games. He was inducted first ballot. His legacy forever burned into Giant history.

Barry Bonds grew up in the Giant Dugout as a young child. He has been a staple of the bay area, breaking records for home runs in a season, and in a career. His unique swing, unforgiving personality, and unforgettable splash shots brought a new century of baseball to the San Fransisco faithful. Now that his reign is over, its time to move on . The Giants are looking to rebuild a team that has struggled at the least since the 2002 trip to the world Series. It's time for the Giants to make a move for the next Icon in their rich baseball history. The Giants would be the perfect fit For Alex Rodriguez.

Though Rodriguez would ask for a hefty contract, which would pull away from younger players, his money would be an investment for a Area that loves its superstars. Take Barry Bonds. He is hated around the league by fans alike, but in San Fransisco, he is a god. Rodriguez's contract would cover Bond's 15.8 Million and Double it, but without resigning Shortstop Omar Vizquel and Third Baseman Pedro Feliz, the Giants will recover almost six million of that other 15 million for the up coming seasons. Plus, the giants have not been shy when it comes to big Contracts. After all they did sign Starter Barry Zito to the biggest Contract for a pitcher ever.

Can you Imagine it now? Alex Rodriguez, smashing Bond's Home Run Record in his own city. Who else would be a better replacement to take over the record for splash hits into McCovey Cove. With such a young, but talented pitching staff, this team could make a push quickly if they brought on a hitter like Rodriguez to give the young developing players someone to protect them. If the Giants bring out the money bags, Alex Rodriguez would jump on the chance to be "the man" in San Fransisco. Who else would be a better fit, to continue this lustrous history of Giants greats.

Final Line: Alex Rodriguez's Best Option is the Giants, where he will be catered with love from fans, a young pitching staff, and a young team that will develop around him.

Alex Rodriguez Seems To Be a Perfect Match for the California Sun

Part III: Move Over David Beckham: Alex Rodriguez Could Be Taking Over Los Angeles

11/2/07

Dexter Sports--

And Finally, the moment you've all been waiting for; The top three candidates for the use of Alex Rodriguez next year. These are the teams that are elite in the hunt for Alex Rodriguez, and have what it takes to pull down Baseball's King. As we move on into the series, you will notice that like New York City, Los Angeles has two teams that are vying this Third baseman. We will take a look into the two teams of L.A. and see if Hollywood can write a new script for the career of the player simply known as A-ROD.

L.A Won't "Dodge" the Bullet if Alex Rodriguez is Interested

(Youngsters such as James Loney would benefit largely
from the presence of Alex Rodriguez)

The Dodgers Seem as almost the perfect fit for Baseball's most prized possesion. Not only is this team full of really good young players, such as Matt Kemp, Andre Either, James Loney, and future closer Jonathan Broxton, there is a group of veterans
that are also thrown in the mix. Players such as Juan Pierre, Nomar Garciaparra, Rafael Furcal, and a promising pitching staff. Rodriguez fits pretty well in this picture, because he could easily play third base, without hardly any changes. Andy LaRoche, who stuggled last year, was eventually replaced at third by Garciaparra. Though Garciaparra held his ground, I could see a move to the outfield, where he could surely hold his ground. We could also see a move where Furcal or Garciaparra move to second base, to make room for Rodriguez at Shortstop or Third Base. What makes this move so intriguing is the fact that former Yankee Manager, Joe Torre has signed on, with most of the former Yankee staff to lead this team to the World Series. Though the payroll for the Dodgers is that of the Yankees, I think they have enough to lure A-ROD in. It will be interesting to see what happens, and If a team that hasnt seen World Series Glory since 1988 will pull the trigger

Final Line: Dodgers will be a major player and will pursue Alex Rodriguez to fill their "superstar" void
Final Ranking: 3 of 8

The Angels Almost the Perfect Fit for Mr. Baseball

(Vlad Guerrero and Owner Arte Moreno
would be happy to see A-Rod in Anaheim)

Angels Owner Arte Moreno promised something big in the off-season, and signing Alex Rodriguez to a long term deal is certainly not out of the question. Though the Angels made it to the playoffs for the fourth straight year, the offense was missing the power that Rodriguez brings to the table. In order to land Rodriguez, the Angels would need to make some adjustments in the infield, which would include moving third baseman Chone Figgins, who lead the team with a .320 average over to Shortstop, removing Orlando Cabrera from the starting Lineup. The Infield, which is an influx of young talent, such as Casey Kotchman, Howie Kendrick and Mike Napoli, they are a very good hitting team, with a powerful outfield that includes Gary Matthews Jr, Vlad Guerrero and Garrett Anderson. Though focus should be on the pitching staff, particularly a veteran to lead this young staff, I think that Rodriguez would fit well in the Angels system, and they are willing to Fork Out the Money to him. The combination of Vlad and A-Rod in the middle of the lineup could be the one component that pushes them out of the first round of the playoffs. Plus, how cool would it be if A-Rod and K-Rod were on the same roster? Look for new GM Tony Reagins to be in talks with Scott Boras on a long term contract.

Final Line: The Angels will definitely be in the hunt and could land him fast.

Final Ranking 2 of 8

Can Arod Shine in one of Baseball's Legendary Dynasties, Or is he better off in a City That Doesn't Care about it's Baseball Team?

Where will Alex Rodriguez End Up In 2008? Part II:Red Sox, Marlins and Bears(Cubs) Oh My!

10/31/07
--Dexter Sports

Though the baseball off-season officially began yesterday, when over 50 players filed for free agency, and multiple players have had their options picked up, the focus has still been on Alex Rodriguez, and the game being played to find out where he will end up in 2008. Tonight, I continue the series with a look into two historic and well-loved franchises, and one that could build itself up to that status if they built around Alex Rodriguez.

The Chicago Cubs:

The Cubs have been rumored to be after Alex Rodriguez ever since Lou Pinella was brought in to lead this team to the promised land. The relationship between the two sure does make this an intriguing team to throw into the mix. Whether it is the curse of the goat that looms over Wrigley Field, or the strings of baseball left over from the infamous "Bartman Baseball Blowup," the cubs need something to propel them from this era that looms over them.

With Aramis Ramirez locked up at third base with a huge contract extension last off-season, The Cubs would have a hefty left side of the infield, and possibly the best lineup in the National League. Cubs prospect shortstop Ryan Theriot would possibly make the switch to second base and the development of youngster Felix Pie could be done at the major league level, without the worry of hefty production. Though a heart of the order that consisted of Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez would automatically insert the Cubs into the playoffs, the franchise has bigger problems to face. Without ownership in place, I cannot see this deal getting done.

Final Line: Though this has been the targeted destination since the beginning of the '07 season, it is not likely that the Cubs could satisfy baseball's greatest possession unless the ownership situation is figured out REAL SOON.
Ranking: 7 of 8

World Champion Red Sox Right in the Middle of the Mix

We've seen it time after time in baseball's off-season. First it was Manny Ramirez in 2000. Next it was David Ortiz in 2002. Insert others, such as Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, and many many more. So why not Rodriguez in 2007? With a chance to spite the Yankees, and to improver their overall offense, It is a very good chance around will move to Massachusetts and sit in the middle of what I would consider the best middle of the order in baseball history.

Though it is a very high possibility that Alex Rodriguez will consider the Red Sox, I am not sure that the Sox will consider him. The Sox have continued to address Mike Lowell, who is now embedded as part of the Red Sox Nation. Though the Red Sox do not have any real high prospects at the shortstop or third base position, the Red Sox are stuck in a overbearing contract with current shortstop Julio Lugo. The emergence of players like Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury have also shown that this teams farm system is actually beginning to pay off. Plus, Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein would be better off rebuilding a bullpen around youngsters Johnathon Papelbon and Manny Declarman. Starting Pitching could also be addressed if the Sox do not offer Curt Schilling a two year deal.

Final Line: Don't Be Surprised if you see AROD in Fenway next year, but with the emergence of Mike Lowell, It seems evident that The Red Sox will defend without Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez Returning Home: Marlins Would Make a Push if They Knew What was Good for Them.

With a Young Core and a solid future, The Marlins, a dying dynasty would be stupid to not consider making a deal for Alex Rodriguez. Nothing would sell better than America's best player with sold-out games and the marketing that he would bring to Tampa, the franchise could easily move forward into the process of building a new stadium.

Though the thought of Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera and Alex Rodriguez builds a scary feature for opposing NL East teams, knowing the Marlins history tells me this wont work for many reasons. First of all, the idea of a long term contract does not exist and the constant rebuilding might pull Rodriguez away from the prospect of playing in his home town. Like always, The Marlins might pass up on a opportunity to build one of the best sports franchises in sports. Though we did see the splurge before the 2003 season, that included the signing of Ivan Rodriguez, Juan Pierre and Mark Redman, and an eventual world series championship, the team held the second "fire house" like it has been known to do in the past. Though Alex Rodriguez could be the savior to the slow death of professional baseball in Florida, I don't think a long term agreement would last in Florida.

Final Line: If Rodriguez can come to terms with the ridiculous ownership in Florida, this is possible, though a long term deal seems nearly impossible.

Alex Rodriguez back in New York? The Odds Might be Higher Than You Think

By Dex
Part 1: Rodriquez Back to New York City: New York Might Have a New KING OF QUEENS
(
Part 1 of a four part series that looks into the teams that Alex Rodriguez Could Sign With)

10/31/07-- Dexter Sports
He is a legend swirled in the euphoria of the Yankee History. He stands tall among the elites: Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig and others that have painted Yankee History into the beautiful combines of Yankee Stadium. Alex Rodriguez was a part of that, until Sunday night, when he announced that he would opt out of the Highest Contract in Sports History. Now, the possibility that potentially baseball's greatest player will end up on his fourth team in his lustrous career is almost evident. But is it? The Yankees could be real players in the Hunt for The League's Mr. Baseball.

Though the Yankees felt that Rodriguez comes back if he accepts the extension, I think that if the right team comes a calling, The Yankees wont hesitate to pull the trigger. Scott Boras, Alex Rodriguez's agent knows this and will play hardball to get his player and his own self more money. I cannot see the Yankees not being a factor, and because George Steinbrenner is still CEO of this franchise, I cannot see the Yankees giving up. Though it isn't completely out of the question, I doubt Alex Rodriguez will return to Yankee Stadium wearing Yankee Pinstripes.

Final Line: Yankees Part ways, but fight to keep him out of Boston.

Alex Rodriguez The New KING of QUEENS: Odds Not likely

Willie Randolph hangs his head in shame. Carlos Beltran and the rest of the Mets Offense cannot believe the season is over. Pedro Martinez was just getting started, but then it all came crashing down. After a disastrous end to a promising playoff run, Alex Rodriguez could be all the Mets need, and I wouldn't put it past them to make the move. For Willie Randolph, the former Yankee Bench Coach, it was just a ride on the seven train, and it could be the Same for Alex Rodriguez

Though it doesn't seem feasible, do not doubt for a second the Mets GM Omar Minaya will be in contact with this off-season's prized possession. Money will not be the issue, as the Mets have a plethora of it, but a major factor will be where to play the third baseman. The Mets current face of the Franchise, David Wright could be moved to first base, but that leaves slugging First Baseman Carlos Delgado out of the picture. The mets are sold that Jose Reyes is the shortstop of the future, and with the cannon he has, I cannot see a move to second base. The Mets dire need for Starting Pitching and a solid setup man could easily out way the option of signing Rodriguez. The Mets though would be an interesting fit, and the mets might be willing to trade of their premier infielders for pitching depth. Though the Mets are a prime team to put up a run for Rodriguez money-wise, It is a reach to assume Alex Rodriguez will move cross town and sign a lengthy contract

Final Line: Mets sit in a good situation and can always fork out money. Picking up Rodriguez would give the front office flexibility in putting a package together for a young starter, but the possibility is a reach

Forget the Idiots: The 2007 Red Sox feel is different

By Dex
David Ortiz Watches it from the Bench. Jason Varitek is behind the plate, waiting for Papelbon's Delivery. Jacoby Ellsbury runs in from Center. The Image of Johnny Damon, or better known as Jesus, running in from center field quickly pops into your head. Those Images of the past brings back a very fond team. One Comprised of Characters of all sorts. A team that came to the field everyday known as the "Idiots." Those feelings suddenly flesh out and your mind zooms in on the new champions of baseball. A different breed. A Young team that is really is some fashion... Unfamiliar.
Both teams clinched in four games on the road, but in completely different styles. The "Idiots" slugged their way to four straight victories. Though they were backed by very good pitching, which included a 21 win season for Curt Schilling and nearly 300 Strike Outs from Pedro Martinez, the '04 series saw a lot of Raw power. This 2007 Team, did it in both fashions, winning two one run games and two blowouts. Though the 2004 team was a testament of will and determination, proved by the only 3-0 comeback in ALCS history, I will argue that this team now is better.
The team aspect of 2004 surely sticks out as possibly the best ever in sports, but this 2007 team has the same feature. They still have their characters, such as Manny, with the laid back, almost nonchalant feel, and "Big Papi" who is always smiling, and brings a fire to the game that excites that fans, to Jason Varitek, the general on the field who lleads his Red Sox into battle. On the other hand though, players such as Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury, Manny Declarman and Jonathon Papelbon bring on a new fuse to this team. That fire of a young player, I think is a bigger driving force than anything in baseball. That perfect mix on this team is what makes this a better clubhouse beyond what the numbers tell you.
Though it was once thought that this team would always have a curse, whether it was the curse of the great bambino, or the recent curse of Doug Mientkiewicz it is time to realize that this is one of the best ran sports franchises in all of sports history. Sure, they have made their mistakes, and sure they have not had the successes of many other organizations, but they are in one of the best positions in the history of sports. With a talented young core and some of the best veterans of the game, this team should have the world series in mind for many years to come

The Best and Worst Acqusitions of the MLB offseason

By Dex
This winter was full of moves that could make or break the respected teams they represent. Most of these will improve teams, but some just do not make sense. Here is a breakdown of the best and worst Off-Season Moves:

Detroit Tigers: Brining in Gary Sheffield is easily one of the best moves this off-season. Sure the tigers lose two top pitching prospects, but their young pitching allows them to do that. Sheffield brings the extra power that the lineup desperately. The Tigers also bring back the core of the future; resigning Brandon Inge, Craig Monroe, Jeremy Bonderman and Bringing back Sean Casey at First.

Chicago Cubs: Jim Hendry said that they were willing to spend Money, and that is what the Cubs did. The first statement was made when they resigned third baseman Aramis ramerez and brought in Alfonso Soriano. The CUbs also brought in depth in the outielf with Cliff Floyd, and a decent bat off the bench, and Mark Derosa, to play second. Not to forget, they bring in two decent bottom end starters in Ted Lily and Jason Marquis. Bringing back Kerry Wood, could be a good asset in the bullpen, if he stays healthy.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Bringing back Garciaparra was a big part of keeping this core together. The Dodgers also bring in Ace Jason Scmidt to lead one of the best rotations in the game, that also adds Randy Wolf, a solid starter that will fill the void at the end of the rotation.

Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox make some very interesting moves this offseason. Bringing in Daisuke Matsuzaka could prove to be the best move in team history, but it could also fluke. Matsuzaka could take a lot of pressure off of Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling and Jonathon Pabelbon. Brandon Donnelly gives them a solid pitcher at the end of the bullpen

Milwaukee Brewers: The Brewers moves make a lot of sense, especially the signing of Jeff Suppan. Suppan gives Ned Yost Comfort in the middle of the rotation, and will give Chris Capuano and Ben Sheets someone to look up to during the season. Johnny Estrada immediately improves the defense and will call a better game and get on base a lot more than Damion Miller.

Some Deals that do not Make Sense:

San Fransisco Giants: Resigning Barry Bonds under his contract is fine, but for so much is just ridiculous. Barry Zito is a good pick, but again he is not worth the contract he recieved. The giants keep getting older, and not looking to the future

Anaheim Angels: The Angels spent a whole lot of money, that didnt make sense. It is hard to say the Angels needed to bring in Gary Matthews JR. Playing Chone Figgins in Center, or resigning Darin Erstad would of made a lot of sense, so there would be more money to spend on bullpen help.

Kansas City Royals: Why do you sign Gil Meche with number one starter money? That doesnt make sense to me, and it will hurt the franchise severely. Octavio Dotel is also a reach at closer, when others were available.

Those are a few of them... Stay tuned for Baseball updates and mroe

Be Careful, What you say can come to haunt you..

By Dex
He was one of the best point guards of the ninetys, as well as a great role model for people that watched him. Tim Hardaway was a team player, who shared the ball and respected the players around him. This week's comments come to a surprise, especially after witnessing his demeanor as a player. Hardaway, being a minority himself, should have thought before he spoke. Sure, you have the right to have your own opinion, but it is also the right of others to be respected. John Amechi did something that is nearly impossible to do, not only in sports, but in this world in general. Hardaway's actions speak louder than his ability and leadership on the court. It is hard to forgive someone, who uses the word hate, when decribing a characteristic of someone. Sorry Tim, you just lost one of your fans. At least the NBA got it right, and fired you for not representing their viewpoints.

Manning Wins MVP But Backs Deserve the Credit

By Dex
After all of Super Bowl Fourty One, I find myself questioning the people around the world, and their choice for the most valuable player. Granted, without Peyton Manning's Presense, which was huge after an early kick return for a touchdown and an opening drive interception, the Colts would not have hoisted the Vince Lambardi Trophy without the play of running backs Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai. Rhodes, who rushed for 113 yards and Addai, who had 10 catches for 66 yards and ran for 77. The reason that the Colts were able to win, was because they settled in the running game, and quieted one of the best defensive lines in the game. Even though Tommie Harris was allowed to play in this game, It was like he never showed up. The weak play by the line, and the control of the offensive line is what made this game the way it truly was. I find it hard to believe that one touchdown pass, which was severely underthrown to Reggie Wayne, can win you an MVP. At Least Addai and Rhodes get a Super bowl ring out of it.
