Man, what a good first Saturday for college football fans. Wasn't It? Michigan loses a squeaker to an underrated Utah Ute squad. We got to see the ACC get blown out of the water. You know, that conference that everyone used to hype. The one that saw supposed powerhouses Virginia Tech and Clemson (#2 recruiting class in '08) get beat by weaker opponents. Throw in losses for Virginia and NC State and you begin to see why everyone is dogging the ACC. It might also be because other teams in the conference, such as North Carolina had to scrap out a win against McNeese State. Or the fact that Maryland could only pull out a 7 point win against Division 1-AA Opponent Delaware.

But unlike most of the power conferences, The ACC is young and talented. As Mentioned above, Clemson ranks second in the 2008 Recruiting class. Who is first. None other than conference foe Miami. Even the Florida State Seminoles (#12 Recruiting Class) have put together some blue chippers. But its the translation of those peices into the final puzzle that matters.

Take for example the 2007 North Carolina Class. Heralded as one of the best in the Nation, the Tar Heels felt with new coach Butch Davis that a new Look was on the way in Tar Heel nation. Davis, though hasn't seen it come together.

The Big Ten though has continued to expand it's talents. Take Illinois. Even though they lost their opener to #6 Missouri, they have built a strong core and winning tradition under one of if not the best recruiter in the nation, in Ron Zook. I Believe that the ACC is moving the same way.

Saturday Quick Hits:

  • ESPN has a great little tidbit about the Stoops brothers today. If you didn't notice, Both Arizona and Okalahoma put a smackdown on their opponents this week. Their combined score against their opponents, 127-2. Not bad when you consider Mike Stoops and Arizona have not gone 2-0 to start a season in his four year tenure. Both could go a combined 4-0 to start the season if Oklahoma beats Cincinnatti and Arizona beats Toledo.
  • There still hasnt been an official update on Ohio State Heisman Hopeful Chris "Beanie" Wells. It was originally thought Wells could be lost on the season, but further reports indicate other wise. Wells will most likely sit out against Ohio this week no matter what. The Buckeyes will face a critical non conference foe in a few weeks, when they will take on #3 USC. Chris Wells could be a key factor in that matchup.
  • Michigan's Terrence Taylor couldn't have said it better. In an interview Taylor clearly stated that Michigan has to move on after a tough loss to Utah. "We need to move on," "We got caught up with the Appalachian State game so much that we lost to Oregon." I couldn't agree more with Taylor. This time though, the loss comes to a Ute Squad that I believe could be BCS bound when it is all said and done. Especially with a weak ACC. If the Wolverines get down on this loss, It could be a long season. Michigan will face Miami of Ohio on Saturday.
