Here is the latest on those drafted in the 2008 MLB Draft:

  • The Twins will announce today that first round pick pick Aaron Hicks has been signed. His signing bonus is expected to be around 1.7 million, the same amount that Brave prospect Jason Heyward received a year ago. Hicks is one of the first to graduate from the MLB sponsored RBI program and be drafted in the first round.
  • According to MLB.com, Marlins first round pick Kyle Skipworth is really close to signing on the dotted line. The Marlins and the left handed Skipworth have had a deal on the table, or have been in negotiations since the day that he was drafted. Skipworth in an interview stated he wanted to be down in south Florida for mini camp by June 20th, so the deal should be finalized soon.
  • The Mets agreed on a deal with first round pick Reese Havens. Havens, who was selected with the 22nd pick, will recieve a 1.4 million dollar signing bonus. Havens, who played shortstop for the South Carolina Game Cocks, has to still pass a physical. According to the same source, the Mets and 18th overall pick Ike Davis have not started negotiations.
  • Speaking of Ike Davis, The on the field fight between him and ASU teammate Brett Wallace in last week's elimination game between Fresno State...was staged. It was supposed to loosen up his teammates, which it did early, but the Bulldogs pulled off the upset and are now in the college world series. The cardinal's number one pick and his teammates aren't. Hmm, I wonder if this maturity will cost him when it comes to signing time. Probably not.
  • Cardinals 13th round pick and Naval Academy graduate Mitch Harris has been told he must report to duty. As a naval graduate he must serve his country for five years. Harris was hoping that in his situation, the Navy would be understanding.
"If I don't get that chance [to play baseball] right now, I'll never get it again. And to fulfill a goal of getting to the pros, it's sad that they would take it away from me."

The Navy responded otherwise stating:

"Bottom line is, we're a nation at war and as a nation at war we believe it is inappropriate for Navy and Marine Corps personnel to be released from service obligation to play sports at a time other sailors and Marines are carrying out their service obligations."

David Robinson, a former NBA center with the San Antonio Spurs, was stuck in the same situation. The Navy worked out a deal with him to serve two years instead of five. We could see something similar here.
