Today is the Day of the Pitcher. Comebacks, Injuries, Rehabs.... Let's take a look.

Top Stories:

  • Joel Zumaya will be in the Tigers' bullpen tonight in San Diego. The flame throwing righty will make his season debut in the same city that shortened it. Just because he is a flame thrower doesn't mean he can fight off fire I guess. Zumaya has lost 20 -30 pounds since the last time he toed the rubber. It was thought that his once electrifying stuff would be lost when he injured his shoulder, but he hasn't lost a beat. Though it was a hard road, and Zumaya even flirted with the idea of retirement, Zoom Zoom has finally made it back to the big leagues. Hopefully he can stay healthy. If so, he will be one of the best late inning weapons in baseball.
  • Josh Johnson of the Florida Marlins had a solid rehab start for the class A Jupiter Hammerheads yesterday. Johnson is fresh off of Tommy John surgery and is hoping for a return to the Marlins rotation after the all-star break. Johnson was 0-3 last year with a 7.47 ERA before shutting it down last year.
  • Carlos Zambrano will miss his next start because of his injured shoulder. The Cubs have scheduled an MRI for today to take a closer look at the injury. If Zambrano's injury is serious, It will be hard to get the same production elsewhere. The only ace available is C.C. Sabathia, and many believe that the Cubs do not have enough top prospects to acquire him. Zambrano is putting up Cy Young type numbers. Rich Hill could be the permanent option if the Cubs do not like anyone available in the market.
Fantasy Focus:

  • Mike Gonzalez shut the door on the Texas Rangers last night. Straight off the DL, the lefty will be the Braves' closer at least until Rafael Soriano is healthy. Gonzalez could be a good option in a league lacking available closers. Here is what Bobby Cox had to say about his outing last night:
    • "We decided in the eighth inning when it came to the ninth, if we're leading, we're going with Gonzo no matter what," manager Bobby Cox said. "And he looked great tonight. He looked better than I thought he might look."
  • Need a starter that is consistent? Look no further than Tigers starter Armando Galarraga. Galarraga is only owned in 50% of leagues, but he already has seven wins. Galarraga's job is secure with Jeremy Bonderman out for the season.
  • How about Randy Wolf? Wolf has a 2.45 ERA in Petco Park, to go along with 77 strikeouts on the season. Not a bad choice in a deep league. Wolf Struck out nine in his last outing against Philly.
