Around the Horn: Prospect Updates

With April's games quickly ending, its time to look at some prospect numbers from around the league. Some have struggled, while others have shined. Here are some number's from baseball's best prospects.

The Good:

Andrew McCutchen OF Pirates- (.276 6 2b 1 DBl) His stat line doesn't look that impressive but he is riding an 11 game hit streak and has been a huge success thus far in AAA Indianapolis. Though at this point, 4 stolen bases does seem like a disappointment, his high .377 OBP makes up for it. Fellow prospects Steve Pearce's presence in the lineup has a lot to do with that. Earlier this month, I suggested that the Pirates rearrange their order and call up McCutchen.

Jeff Larish 1B Tigers- (.282/.370/.535 7 Hrs 20 RBI) Larish is showing why the tigers love him and have moved him quickly through the organization. Larish hit 28 homers and drove in 101 runs in 2007 at AA Erie. Larish was the Tiger's minor league player of the year in 2007.

Ian Gac 1B Texas (.397/.467/.833 9 HRs 24 RBIs) Gac's bat is finally catching on in low a Clinton or the midwest league. Gac was a 2003 26th round draft choice. He is been in clinton since 2005, but could see a quick promotion coming up in may. Many still don't know if he is the real thing or not.

The Ugly:

Brent Lillibrige SS Braves (.195/.267/.273) Lillibrige has struggled since making the call up to AAA Richmond this year. He is hitting though and that is a good sign. In 15/19 games he has reached base safely. Don't worry Braves fans. I think with a little bit of time, we will see Lillibrige get hott down the stretch.

Tyler Clippard SP Nationals (0-3 7.32 ERA .295 opponent average) Though Clippard is averaging 10.9 K/9 he is not keeping the ball down to eliminate runs. For Clippard it is all about control and when he finds that, he will be quite alright. His struggles might be because of the stresses of trying to make it to the show, since he was a rushed prospect in New York.

Mike Moustakas SS Royals (.203/.263/.203) Moustakas, the young 19 year old is in a similar slump in Lillebrige that doesn't seem to be harmful. He also has reached safely in 15/19 games and as a younger, slumps like these are expected. Look for Moustakas to step up to the plate a bit more firmly as the season develops. Moustakas was taken 2nd overall in the 2007 Draft.
