Odds and Ends around Major League Baseball

A lot of things are going on around the league, here are a couple snippets to think about:

  • ESPN is reporting that Rocco Baldelli will start the season on the DL after doctors cannot diagnose his extreme fatigue after short workouts. Look for the Rays to adjust the issue, by moving DH Jonny Gomes to the Outfield and Signing a DH. Sammy Sosa, Mike Piazza, Kenny Lofton and even Barry Bonds could all be options free agent wise. With Brandon Inge available from Detroit, the Rays could go after him and play him at third base, but they seem ready to give Evan Longoria a shot at third. Other possible trade options could be Coco Crisp,(don't know if i see this happening) Matt Murton(again don't see this happening) and even possibly one of the many Outfielders in Milwaukee (Gabe Gross, Tony Gwynn Jr, Corey Hart). I like this option if Baldelli's condition is career threatening.
  • Jays reliever Casey Jannsen will miss the whole season after injuring his elbow in a simulated game on Tuesday. Sorry Jays fans, but this means Armando Benitez should make the club as a setup man. He just signed a minor league deal.
  • With Troy Patton out all season, The Oriole's number 5 spot in the rotation is wide open. It looks like the organization will stay in house, since it is in a rebuilding mode anyways. If the Cubs and Orioles ever pull off a trade for Brian Roberts, look for Sean Gallagher to possibly win that spot. Right now it looks like Brian Burres could win out this job, but don't count out Jim Johnson and Hayden Penn. Radhames Lyz has been counted out of the rotation but could make the bullpen. Bullpen Coach Alan Dunn stated he reminds him a lot of Carlos Marmol.
60 year old Billy Crystal will make his Yankee Debut on Thursday. Though he is ready for his first major league action, he is scared of a drug test stating, "I'm supposed to bring blood and urine to the umpire tomorrow," he kidded Wednesday. "I might test positive for Maalox."

That is all for now, Stay tuned for more information on Baseball, and a possible NFL Mock Draft.
