UPDATE: Here is an audio interview with Brett Lawrie. Lawrie sat down with brewers color commentator Jim Powell.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt noted on his blog that the reason the Brewers knew so much about Canadian Brett Lowrie because their western Canada scout, Marty Lehn was one of his coaches on the Canadian junior national team. Scouting Director Jeff Zduriencik, was receiving information daily via telephone or email about Lawrie while him and his teammates tore through the Dominican Republic and even the Royals extended spring training team.

Lawrie, who has been compared to Larry Walker and Justin Morneau, has volunteered to make the switch to catcher position. It is picks like these that have kept the Brewers organization growing, and has fielded such hefty talent. Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy, Corey Hart among others have been part of the recent draft strategies. With others, such as Mat Gamel, Matt LaPorta, Alices Escobar and this upcoming draft class, the Brewers should be successful for years to come.

Lawrie believes that he should be ready for the bigs within a year and a half. Though it sounds cocky, many agree. Unlike most draftees, Lawrie has been using a wooden bat since the age of 14. Plus, the Brewers had a kid named Ryan Braun who had the same feeling. He seemed to turn out ok.
