Russell Branyan has been known as a streaky hitter in his time as a major leaguer. He has seen times where, like now he has gone on a tear, and he has seen his share of struggles. Many times, including last year with the Padres, and 2006 with the Devil Rays (they were still the D-rays back then) Branyan has floated with the Mendoza line. He will surely see his amount of strike outs. His first stop in Milwaukee (2004) saw him strike out 68 times in only 51 games. But the theory in picking him up is simple. When Russell Branyan is on, he is on.

Branyan's bat has caught fire since his late May call up. After taking over for 3rd baseman Bill Hall against right handed pitching, Branyan has tallied 4 dingers in his last five starts. In nine total games, he has five homers and 7 RBIs. With that kind of production, it is worth dropping someone on your bench for this guy. It is a small sample size, but this streaky type hitting is what wins in head to head leagues. Though Branyan isn't the long term option for the Brewers, (only 80+ games in 3/10 seasons) He could be the short boost you need right now for struggling third baseman, such as Miguel Cabrera, Chone Figgins, Scott Rolen and of course Bill Hall. Branyan is owned in 5 % of ESPN public leagues.
