We got a lot for ya in the latest edition of Around The Horn. Let's jump right into the action.

Rumors and Grumblings:

  • Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton is reporting that Gil Meche will stay put this season. When Meche was asked about the rumor of him going to the Cubs, he laughed stating, "How is that going to happen?" Meche has a no-trade clause and would most likely decline any trade. Anyways, Dayton Moore, GM of the Royals was quoted as saying, "How are we going to make a run in 2010 without Meche?" It will be interesting to see what happens by then. If they can sign Tim Melville and Mike Montgomery, there might not be room for Meche in 2010.
  • Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times believes that Erik Bedard talks in Toronto have cooled. Bedard who is a Canadian native, was thought to have had the Jays on his radar with free agency approaching in 2009. It seems though that the Jays have lost interest in Bedard. AJ Burnett, who has been Jeckle and Hyde in his time in Toronto is likely to opt out of his contract with the Jays at the end of the Season. The Jays could go internal, especially since their last free agent splurge didnt work out (BJ Ryan, AJ Burnett, Frank Thomas).
  • On the Giants front, Kevin Correia made a great final rehab start and will be called up for Sunday's game against the A's. Just a fantasy heads up. Also, Noah Lowry isn't giving up on returning this season. Lowry states he is getting closer and closer to throwing again. Bruce Bochy and his staff has stated before that Lowry will shut it down for the season.
  • Jim Leyland will be splitting the catching duties between Ivan Rodriguez and Brandon Inge. The two will flip flop starts no matter who is on the mound. Sounds to me that the Tigers are preparing to make Inge the full time catcher next year. Rodriguez is a free agent this winter.
  • And Finally, sources are reporting that Roger Clemens used Viagra as a supplement to improve his play on the baseball field. Viagra helps build endurance and can help deliver performance enhancing drugs to the blood stream more quickly. Victor Conte, head of BALCO, says that all of his athletes used it. That means Mr. Giambi is even scarier in a gold thong. My god. I normally hate to cover this topic on this blog, but this is just beyond crazy. Does this mean that MLB has to ban the drug? I mean it does boost play on the field. Good thing Rafael Palmero is retired.
Columns:

Here are some good columns from around the Nation.

  • The Seattle Times is in love with Ken Griffey Jr. today. Steve Kelly has a piece on the Sluggers ability to put a smile on the faces of many in Seattle. Jerry Brewer looks into Griffey's past in Seattle. Both are great reads, check them out.
  • The New York Post says it is time to start sweating if you are a Yankee or a fan. I just got a bad picture of Jason Giambi sweating in only a thong and a bottle of Viagra in his hand.
  • The St. Peterburg Times believes that Garza's actions in the scuffle with Dioner Navarro show that he needs a lesson in maturity. I disagree. The kid just has some fire. He thought that Navarro made the wrong call, and Garza got upset. It happens. Nate Robertson of the Tigers once did it to Pudge Rodriguez in 2005. Pitchers are going to get upset with their battery mate. It is part of the game. I like to see that fire in a pitcher.
Injuries:

  • The New York Post reports that Ryan Church will hit the 15 day DL. This move should have been made a while ago. Church is ailing from post concussion syndrome.
  • Ace Adam Wainwright will hit the 15 day DL because of an injured middle finger on his pitching hand. It doesn't look like Wainrwright will need surgery though.
  • Rickie Weeks' sprained left knee will land him on the 15 day DL for the third straight season. Doug Melvin wants to be safe after losing Yovani Gallardo earlier in the season. Infielder / outfielder Hernan Iribarren was called up from AAA Nashville to take his place on the roster.
