The "Price" Is Right
After much anticipation and a 95 minute rain delay, David Price finally took the mound for the Class-A Vero Beach Devil Rays. Price gave the Devil Rays 5 scoreless innings last night on the way to a 2-0 victory. He struck out the first batter he faced and finished with 3 more as the night went on. Price allowed only 3 hits (all singles) and walked just one batter, reaching 98-mph on the radar gun. He faced only 17 batters throwing 73 pitches, 49 of which for strikes. The rain delay is a likely factor into why he was not allowed to stay in the game longer. It is expected that Price will be sent to Double-A Montgomery within a matter of weeks. He is a potential big league call-up late in the season.
Drafted first overall by the Rays a year ago, Price has been heralded as the best pitching prospect in the Rays' system after a phenomenal season last year in college. In his final year, as a junior at Vanderbilt, Price finished 11-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 193 strikeouts in just 133 innings.
