Around The Horn: Does placing Gary Sheffield in the OF mean its Barry Time in Detroit?

Gary Sheffield has made it clear that he is thankful for moving back into Left Field. He feels that it will benefit his offense and in the long run make him more comfortable. With the recent release of Jacque Jones and the mixing up of the tigers lineup, this couldn't come at a better time. With Barry Bonds and other established free agents looking to get re-established and the MLBPA stepping in, The Tigers could be on the prowl for someone who gets on base a ton, while having some consistent power. Well, I wonder who that could be?

Sheffield's move to left field only makes the signing of Barry Bonds probable. In place of the released Jacque Jones, the Tigers called on youngster Matt Joyce, who was last night's designated hitter. In this potent lineup, a team built to win, we know that this wont last. He has to be a stop gap so the tigers can make a deal with either Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mike Piazza or any of the plethora of veterans out there. Barry Lamar Bonds is the signing that makes sense here.

The only valid reason that Sheffield could move to the outfield and leave power hitting Marcus Thames out of a job is bringing in Bonds. He is the only free agent that is a possible upgrade to the Tiger's number one power option of the bench. Thames is a guy who cracked nearly 30 homers from the bench in 06 and close to 20 in 07, could be a clear fill in. It just doesn't make sense to do this unless the Barry Bonds circus is scheduled to be playing at Comerica Park daily.
