Around the Horn: Bits and Pieces around the League

Good Evening to all. After watching a few games tonight, I ran into some interesting stats and tidbits that I thought I would share.

  • Yankees catcher Jorge Posada threw on the first baseman's glove in tonight's loss to Baltimore. It was interesting to see, considering his shoulder won't allow him to catch. It shows how bad the Yankees need his bat. Last year the Yankees scored a little more than 5 runs a game. So far, they have only scored 4 a game. Posada hopes to catch by next Thursday. Also in other Yankee news, did you know Jose Molina is hitting .364 with 7 doubles(that leads all the majors).
  • Eric Byrnes extended his hitting streak to 14 games today in his last at bat. To go along with the hitting streak, Chris Burke, Byrnes and bench coach Kirk Gibson are growing mustaches together to keep the Arizona Domination alive. They all look hideous. Beyond that offense, the bullpen has been lights out. Did you know that Juan Cruz was second in bullpen pitchers in k/9 last year? The only one better was Jonathon Papelbon.
  • Houston Astros' Manager Cecil Cooper put shortstop Miguel Tejada in the Three Hole for the first time this season. Cooper did it to produce more base runners for Lance Berkman who is killing the ball to start the season. Carlos Lee was 5th in the order. I saw Cooper do this in spring training a few times to feel it out. I think it gives that offense the best chance to score runs.
